What Is Chemical Blending?

The Same Product, Every Time It Ships

Chemical blending is the controlled mixing of two or more raw materials into a uniform product that meets a set formula and specification. Order of addition, temperature, shear and mixing time all affect the result, so a blend is only as good as the process and testing behind it.

Companies outsource blending when they need more capacity, a second source, or a finished product without running their own plant. Toll blending runs your formula with your materials. Custom blending puts sourcing, blending and packaging in our hands.

Blending connects to the rest of our services. We can synthesize an active ingredient and blend it into your formulation on the same campus, or prove a new blend in pilot plant & scale-up before commercial runs.

Built to your formula and spec

Two Programs. One Campus.

Toll Blending or Custom Blending

The difference comes down to who owns the formula and who buys the raw materials. Both programs use the same tanks, lab and quality systems.

Option 1

Toll Blending
Your Formula. Our Tanks. Your IP.

You provide the formula and specifications, and usually the raw materials. We blend, test and package to your instructions, and the formula stays yours.

Best for: formulators and brands with an established formula that need blending capacity without adding equipment or staff.

Option 2

Custom Blending
Your Spec. Our Sourcing. Packaged and Ready.

You set the performance targets and specification. We source the raw materials, blend, test and package finished product ready to ship to you or your customers.

Best for: companies that want finished, packaged product without managing raw materials, equipment or inventory.

FAQ

Straight answers to what buyers ask us most before a blending project.

What is chemical blending?

Chemical blending is the controlled mixing of two or more raw materials into a uniform product that meets a set formula and specification. Order of addition, temperature, shear and mixing time all affect the result. At SantoTolling, blends are made in 33 vessels and 67 tanks on our Spartanburg, South Carolina campus and tested in our 24/7 analytical lab before release.

In toll blending, the client supplies the formula and often some or all of the raw materials, and SantoTolling blends it for a processing fee while the client keeps ownership of the formula. In custom blending, SantoTolling sources the raw materials, blends to the client's specification and delivers packaged product. SantoTolling offers both.

SantoTolling blends additive packages, corrosion inhibitors, dispersants, antifoams, surfactant and emulsifier blends, industrial lubricants, metalworking fluids, pesticide formulations and adjuvants, and multi-component custom blends built to client specifications.

Yes. SantoTolling offers both liquid and powder blending, and its aqueous spray dryers can turn liquid concentrates into spray-dried powders. Share your powder requirements during the consultation so our engineers can confirm the right equipment for your product.

Each blend follows a documented formula and order of addition under SantoTolling's ISO 9001:2015 quality system. The 24/7 analytical lab tests raw materials and finished batches for properties such as viscosity, water content by Karl Fischer, surface tension, particle size and composition by GC or FTIR before product is released.

SantoTolling packages blended products in drums, totes or bulk, offers repackaging, and provides bulk storage, warehousing and logistics so finished product can be held on site and shipped on your schedule.

Yes. Because synthesis, blending and packaging run on the same campus, SantoTolling can make an active ingredient or intermediate in its reactors and blend it into a finished formulation without shipping material between sites.

Start with a free consultation by calling (864) 585-3661, emailing sales@santolubes.com or submitting the project form on this page. Share your formula or specification, target batch size and annual volume, packaging needs and any safety data sheets, and an engineer will follow up to scope the project.
