What Is Contract Chemical Manufacturing?

Outsourced Production, Without Giving Up Control

Contract chemical manufacturing is when a company hires a third-party manufacturer to produce its chemical product using the manufacturer's facility, equipment, raw material sourcing, labor and quality systems. You set the specifications and keep the brand. The manufacturer delivers finished product that meets them.

Most companies come to us for one of two reasons. Some have a product, or an idea for one, but no plant to make it in. Others already manufacture but are short on capacity, need a backup source or want to launch a new line without tying up their own reactors. SantoTolling supports both, from the first pilot batch through full commercial supply.

The difference from toll manufacturing comes down to who handles the inputs. In a toll arrangement you usually supply the formula and some or all of the raw materials. Under contract, we source and qualify materials and hand you a finished, tested product.

Two Models. One Partner.

Contract Manufacturing That Fits Where You Are

Start with a turnkey program or add capacity to a process you already run. Both models use the same reactors, lab and quality systems, so you can move between them as your volumes change.

Option 1

Full-Service Contract Manufacturing
Your Spec. Our Plant. A Finished Product.

We manage the whole path from formulation support to delivery. You define what the product needs to do and how it ships. Our team handles everything in between.

Best for: brands launching a new chemical product, and companies that want finished goods without building or staffing a plant.

Option 2

Capacity Expansion & Overflow Production
Your Process. More Capacity. No New Plant.

Already making the product? We take your established process, match it to the right equipment and run it to your specs so your own plant can stay focused.

Best for: manufacturers running near capacity, buyers that need supply redundancy, and teams scaling faster than their plant can.

Have your own formula and raw materials? See our toll manufacturing service.

Why SantoTolling®

What You Gain When We Make It for You

Outsourcing only works when the partner already has the plant, the people and the paperwork in place. Here’s what comes with a SantoTolling contract.

No Capital Outlay

Use 19 reactors, 33 vessels and 67 tanks that are already installed, permitted and staffed instead of funding your own.

Faster Time to Market

Skip equipment lead times, construction and hiring. Your project starts in a facility that is running today.

Pilot to Production on One Campus

Bench, pilot and commercial batches run in the same operation, so your process never gets handed off between sites.

Quality You Can Verify

ISO 9001:2015 quality systems and a 24/7 lab test raw materials, in-process samples and finished batches against your specs.

Regulatory Support Built In

EPA and FIFRA registration, ChemSteward certification and Kosher and Halal products, with documentation handled by our team.

One Partner for the Supply Chain

Sourcing, packaging, bulk storage, warehousing and delivery under one agreement, with fewer vendors to manage.

Side by Side

Contract vs. Toll Manufacturing

The right model depends on who owns the process, who buys the raw materials and how much of the work you want to hand off.

FAQ

Straight answers to what buyers ask us most before starting a project.

What is contract chemical manufacturing?

Contract chemical manufacturing is an arrangement where a company outsources production of a chemical product to a third-party manufacturer that provides the facility, equipment, raw materials, labor and quality control. At SantoTolling, the client sets the specifications and keeps the brand, while our team sources, produces, tests, packages and ships the product from our campus in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

In toll manufacturing, the client supplies the formula and often some or all of the raw materials, and pays a fee for processing. In contract manufacturing, the manufacturer sources the raw materials and delivers a finished product made to the client's specifications. SantoTolling offers both models, so a project can start in one and move to the other as volumes change.

Yes. SantoTolling can take an established process and run it in our reactors to cover peak demand, a planned plant outage, a second-source requirement or a new product line. Our engineers review your process documentation, match it to the right equipment and validate the first batches against your specifications before commercial runs.

Your formulations, specifications and brand remain yours. Every SantoTolling project starts under a confidentiality agreement, and ownership terms are set in writing before any technical details are shared or production begins.

SantoTolling runs stainless steel reactors from 300 to 12,000 gallons and glass-lined reactors from 300 to 4,000 gallons, supported by 33 vessels and 67 tanks. That range covers pilot batches through full commercial production on the same campus.

SantoTolling handles alkoxylation, alkylation, amidation, condensation, esterification, transesterification, polymerization, hydrogenation, reductive amination, quaternization and other reactions at pressures up to 500 psig, temperatures from -15°C to 300°C and vacuum down to 10 mm Hg. Blending, distillation, aqueous spray drying and wiped film evaporation are also available.

SantoTolling is ISO 9001:2015 certified, holds ChemStewards certification, is EPA and FIFRA registered, and produces Kosher and Halal certified products. A 24/7 analytical laboratory with GC, GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR, FTIR and UV-Vis instruments tests raw materials, in-process samples and finished batches.
